My book club loved this one. I went to the website and got the recipe for potato peel pie. No one had the nerve to make it. (I'm not a great baker anyway, so I wasn't tempted.) I found maps showing the location of the Channel Islands, so everyone could see how much closer the islands were to France than to England. The discussion was great.

"Wonderfully written with a deceptive lightness, this novel explores the German occupation of the island of Guernsey during WWII and the redemptive powers of literature and friendship. Highly recommended." definitely agree, it was refreshing to read such a wonderful book about the importance of friendship especially at a difficult time. Perhaps a little predictable in its ending but loved it all the same!

I'm looking for some HenLit; books about mature women who face real-life challenges. I'm sick of reading about women whose biggest decisions involve choosing the right wrinkle filler or buying the right designer bag. Any suggestions?

I read "Husbands May Come and Go but Friends are Forever" and loved it! It was so well-written and realistic that my husband also enjoyed it. I related to the women because they're much closer to my age than those in most 'Chick Lit' books.

Detective Morgan Reynolds thought her nightmare was over when serial killer Charles ‘The Slasher’ Tate was sent to prison for her husbands murder. But she was wrong. The Slasher has escaped and he’s making it even more personal this time. Tate has kidnapped her son and is giving her 72 hours to find the answers he wants or Jared dies.
From the first sentence in the first chapter I was captivated by this book and couldn’t stop reading till I was finished. Ms. Patrick has written a spine tingling , page turning novel. If you like good cleanly written mysteries, then I recommend grabbing a copy of “Journey To Redemption” and as the old saying goes ”Enjoy The Ride” because once you start you won’t want to put the book down till you are finished. Coming soon Sept 15th,2009. Please read Lynn's complete review at Books Books and More Books http://read-n-review.blogspot.com/2009/09/journey-to-redemption-by-anne-patrick.html. It’s also posted at Goodreads.

The Road by Cormac McCarthy caused one of the best discussions our club has had. It wasn't one of the best-loved books, but everyone had an opinion about the various themes brought up. Also, The Glass Castle ignited quite a discussion.

I'm still pumped up from our local book club's recent read: TWELVE STONES by Barbara Carole. This book is continually surprising. It swept me into worlds – both natural and supernatural – we seldom get to know.

Okay, they are just minimally illustrated, but the Hank the Cowdog books are a great first chaper book for kids; they are engaging and humorous and parents can have fun reading along.

Farewell is my favorite, but I also For Whom the Bell Tolls, as well as The Old Man. Bottom line: You can't really have a solid background in American literature with some Hemingway.

This is a memoir you can’t forget. It's an arresting story, rich with multicultural detail and adventurous exploration, a vivid portrayal of human and superhuman relationships. Love, drama, passion and spiritual revelation combine to create a dynamic story for the intellectually curious. PS - I loved it!

I just read "TWELVE STONES: Notes on a Miraculous Journey by BARBARA CAROLE." Newly published, this is a jewel of a book with a great story. A beautiful and earthy writer, Carole pursues an intellectual quest for truth, only to discover a world that needs love even more than truth.
I found the multicultural settings just fascinating and the story riveting. It was beautifully constructed and surprisingly poignant - a book I can't forget. I laughed, I cried, I couldn't stop turning the pages. "Twelve Stones" carried me to a spiritual realm I dared to visit for the first time. It was an exciting journey from cover to cover.

" I sure agree. I found this book difficult to put down. It read more like a novel than a memoir, and the pages flew through adventures in countries around the world. At the same time, Carole delved into thoughtful query and revealed powerful emotions as she describes a life that was transformed and set free. For me, it was compelling and bold, it was an honest and intimate search for the truth that opened up a new way to view a spiritual life. I think I'll read it again.

Hoffman is best known for Practical Magic, but she has a whole bevy of novels that are enjoyable fiction, with a good bit of magical realism. I have found all the books of hers I have read very compelling.

Krakauer also wrote Into the Wild (made into a decent movie) and Under the Banner of Heaver. My preference is fiction, but I really like his writing.

First, I'm a 37-year-old guy, and I think Anne Tyler is BRILLIANT. I have read about 7 or 8 of her books, and I have others I haven't gotten to (including the ones Nancy recommends heavily). Here's ones I've read in descending order of how good I thought they were:
-Breathing Lessons -Accidental Tourist -Ladder of Years -A Patchwork Planet -Saint Maybe (Audio) -Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant -A Slipping Down Life -Amateur Marriage -Back When We Were Grownups (Audio)
I think that's it. So there you go. The movie version of Accidental Tourist is fantastic, and so is Breathing Lessons (which was a Hallmark Hall of Fame TV movie with James Garner and somebody else famous).
Anyway, there you go. Oh, and I've heard good things about Digging to America, and it's on my list!

I had a hard time getting into Prodigal Summer at first, but because I love her books, I gave it some extra time. Once I figured out I was reading parallel stories that would, I suspected intersect it raised my curiosity enough to keep at it. I was glad I stuck with it.

I just finished Prodigal Summer, and I agree that it took a little time to get into compared to say, The Poisonwood Bible. I do recommend trying to get through it, because the messages of life as a gift, and the consequences of human interference with nature are beautifully orchestrated.
