This is one of the most enjoyable novels I've read in a long time. Its hero is Perry, a "slow" man (not retarded: his IQ is 76!) who wins big in the lottery in Washington State. Ms. Wood does an amazing job of telling a story about life and death, love true and false, friends and real bad guys, all in Perry's voice. There are some very sad parts and parts that had me laughing nearly to tears. This is Patricia Wood's first novel. Long may she write!

She made her main character real and believable, not easy to do. The Gram character, though, could have easily stolen the book. I, too, and looking forward to more from this author.
