Children's Books
I am so pleased that Harcourt has reissued some of the classic children’s books I most love. Not only have they brought out the complete set of P. L. Travers’ books about the incomparable Mary Poppins. A whole new generation can now meet her in Mary Poppins, Mary Poppins Comes Back, Mary Poppins Opens the Door, and Mary Poppins in the Park, all illustrated by Mary Shepard. These are the same editions my children read, and that I read as a child, too.
Harcourt has also reissued some of the best kid’s sports fiction by John R. Tunis, including The Kid from Tomkinsville, as well as Eleanor Estes’s The Hundred Dresses. All these authors and their books are included in the forthcoming Book Crush, and I wish more publishers would comb through their backlist and bring out some of the best from the past.

My favorite children's book from when I was a child is The Phantom Tollbooth by Norman Juster. As a children's lead bookseller at a big chain store, I recommend it to many questioning parents and children! The richness of the vocabulary and the adventure of the story get me every time I've read it!

We checked out "Sometime's I'm Bombaloo" by Rachel Vail from our library. It was so appropriate for my 3 year old daughter. The book is written fom the perspective of a young girl, Katie Honors, and describes how she is usually very good, responsible and easy to get along with. However, when her baby brother knocks down her blocks, she turns into Bombaloo, her angry alter-ego. The story details how Katie feels when she's Bombaloo as well as how she feels afterwards. It's a great story to help young kids express those sometimes big, scary emotions like anger. I highly recommend this story.

My Father's Dragon by Ruth Stiles Gannett combines many elements of a child's adventure. Wild beasts, travel and using your wits to keep you safe. I read the book as a child, read it to my children and then to other children when mine were too old.

I'll never forget reading "Where the Sidewalk Ends" and "A Light in the Attic." I still recite "Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout" to myself whenever my partner asks me to take the garbage out, and I'm 30!
