If I were stranded on a desert island with only 10 books to read, these are the ones I would want:
1. Tao Te Ching ~ by Lao Tzu, translated by Stephen Mitchell
2. The HarperCollins Study Bible: New Revised Standard Version
3. The Great Transformation: The Beginning of our Religious Traditions ~ by Karen Armstrong
4. The Complete Gospels ~ edited by Robert J. Miller
5. High Tide in Tucson ~ by Barbara Kingsolver
6. The Chosen ~ by Chaim Potok
7. A Prayer for Owen Meany ~ by John Irving
8. Songs of the Humpback Whale ~ by Jodi Picoult
9. Worlds in Collision ~ by Immanuel Velikovsky
10. A Short History of Nearly Everything ~ by Bill Bryson
That's the book list, and each one is a single volume. I do, however, also require a good-sized box full of yellow legal pads and another box full of pens. Fine-point Zebra pens with blue ink would be nice. Although I'm first to arrive on this deserted island, I'm sure other people with books will float ashore because I would be on a cruise with other readers, of course. Some of them will bring along those books on How to Build a Boat, How to Survive on a Desert Island, and How to Build a Strong Shelter, with bookcases of course.

What - no Grace Paley? I don't have a "Top 10" list for my desert island vacation yet, but...I KNOW I'd take Grace Paley. There's no one else who can make me think I'm surrounded by a crowd of friends and family. Her characters and their voices are vivid...no, livid! with life, even when they're just sulking around. I've never read "realer" dialogue, either.

Oh yes, Grace Paley--I love her. For the list tho, I was thinking lots of pages. I would rewrite my list and omit Gatsby I suppose to include collected Paley. Or maybe Unsworth would go. Only 10 books - impossible decision. Thanks for the reminder. Now I want to reread her.

In no particular order (OK, the order I thought of them, so there's probably some psychoanalytical order, but I don't know what it is)... - The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe - The Shining - The Silence of the Lambs - The Bible - Grace for the Moment - The Hitch-hikers Guide to the Galaxy - An Empty Journal (sorry, I'd need one and it's a book!) - Water for Elephants - Little Women - SAS Survival Handbook It was easy to pick 9, harder to pick the last 10....

How to pick ten?My mind won't leave it alone now.Should have picked this, how could I leave out that? Going through other lists and making a new list of those I need to read. Incredible that some people never read anything.
