I LOVE Graham Swift -- I'm not the biggest fan of short stories, but enjoy his. I actually didn't discover Swift, as many readers have, with Waterland. I picked up a copy of Last Orders during a very short stopover in London on my way to France in 1997. The moody, melancholic spell of the book entranced me, and I immediately set about reading everything else he'd written (save The Light of Day). This isn't happy beach reading, to be sure, but his writing is lyrical and moving and heart-wrenchingly human. Should be required reading.

We read Last Orders a while ago in one of our Book Discussions.I loved the premise of Last Orders. I haven't read anything else by him but you've now brought him to my attention again. I'll have to explore some of his stuff. Add him to that teetering pile of books I want to read Next. I think there should be a reading holiday - one day in our calendar when the only thing on our agenda is settling in with a good book (or two). We should get the day off from work, and have nothing else scheduled. Now, there's a fantasy!
