"I see... you've got a brilliant sense of humor, you have."

There was a columnist in, I believe, College & Research Libraries, who wrote that the presence of the so-called Librarian "Action" Figure would prove whether or not librarians had a sense of humour. So in other words, he begged the question in that he was already tagging those of us offended by the doll as those without a sense of humour. How can that be? Why is it expected that everyone in our profession would leap at purchasing this, and then be proud of the continuing maintenance of our sorry, pathetic stereotype?

What has offended me the most is that those of us librarians who have indeed found the doll to be offensive and off-putting have been chastised by librarians on the other side. Why is it not ok for some of us to say this doll sucks? Why is there only one side? I have a great sense of humour, I love stand-up comedy, and love a good laugh like the next person. Because I don't like to see my profession's stereotype continue to be pushed forward by pop culture, this means I don't have a sense of humour?

At a Canadian Library Assn conference many years ago, there was a panel called "Kiss Marion the Librarian Goodbye", at which panelists discussed how the stereotypical librarian, i.e., one that shushes, wears a long, dowdy and colourless outfit, has no sex, hair in a bun, etc., was on the way out. With the presence of this doll, obviously this is far, far from happening.

Because I don't like the doll, please don't accuse me of not having a sense of humour. I have not accuse you of anything, and support your right to buy the doll.
