What My Child is Reading Right Now

Looking for kid-tested recommendations!

SOK says: My 11-year-old is reading "The True Meaning of Smekday." His favorite book of the past year was "The Mysterious Benedict Society." My 8-year-old just finished both the Clementine books -- she loved them.

Terasita says: My eight year old daughter is absolutely crazy over the new Ivy & Bean series by Annie Barrows. For the past three years she's been a one book series woman Arthur, Arthur, Arthur! Now suddenly it's Ivy this and Bean that. It's so great to watch her discover something new!

Amy says: My seven year old is really into "chapter books". She enjoys the Box Car Children books. She also tries to get her hands on A-Z Mysteries as much as she can! I just intorduced her to Ramona and it's funny to watch her fall in love with a character from my childhood!!

SOK says: My 10-year-old just finished The Westing Game and is currently enjoying The Swiss Family Robinson. My 7-year-old is enjoying Matt Christopher's Soccer Cats series.

LibrarianJack says: Although not technically my children, I claim the teens in my 6-8th grade book club for an hour session twice a month. They just finished reading Engymion Spring by Matthew Skelton, and we all agree that the loose ends scream sequel. If Skelton doesn't write a follow-up, my teens may be a bit disappointed. Their next adventure will take them to 16th century France, in an historical fiction favorite of mine: Queen's Own Fool: A Novel of Mary Queen of Scots by Jane Yolen and Robert J. Harris.

SOK says: My 9-year-old is reading Redwall, the first in the series by Brian Jacques. My 7-year-old is going through the Cam Jansen books. Our most recent favorite picture book was "When Charlie McButton Lost Power."

Paroof says: My son just rediscovered an old favorite of ours - Tatty Ratty by Helen Cooper. He brought it into my room this morning and declared that he had already picked out his book for bed tonight. Tatty Ratty is a much loved stuffed rabbit who belongs to Molly. One day Tatty Ratty accidently gets left on a bus. Molly, the little girl who is heart broken to have lost him, tells the story of Tatty Ratty's adventures to get back home. The illustrations are absolutely lovely! Both my son and I highly recommend this book!

Heidianna says: I just discovered "Bats at the Beach," which is a wonderful illustrated children's book that shows a large group of bats enjoying a beach outing--at night. The pictures are dark, but evocative, and it's so much fun to read out loud! My three year old nephew loves it!. We first heard about it on NPR.

MissRoo says: My niece is going through her Dr. Seuss phase. Last time I babysat her, she read The Cat and the Hat to me about six times!

Cosmosgrrl says: My 14 year old son just finished the latest R.A. Salvatore book and devoured the graphic novels based on those books. He also enjoyed Endymion Spring, as did I. And yes, there should definitely be a sequel to it. Son also loved the Bartimaeus Trilogy and is eagerly awaiting the next book from Christopher Paolini. My 11 year old daughter is rediscovering Charlotte's Web.

Kristen Jane says:
My 2.5 year old loves Walter The Farting Dog.

Bibliocat says: My 9 year old son loves the Ghosthunters series by Cornelia Funke. They are not especially scary and have a friendly ghost that is introduced in the first book.

Totally thrilled that my 11 year-old daughter came home from camp and wanted to go to the bookstore. She's on the fourth Warriors book by Erin Hunter. Googling the name found an interesting link: http://www.sfbookcase.com/author.asp?forename=Erin&surname=Hunter
Apparently the name is a pseudonym.

Both she and her 13 year old brother are worn out on Harry Potter and Series of Unfortunate Events

We have been listening to the Magic Tree House series by Mary Pope Osborne. She has been totally enthralled by them! And she's picking up many cultural and historical details that she wouldn't have been exposed to (for a while) otherwise.

My daughter is currently re-reading Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix as well as the Dragonology Handbook. (She's a constant reader, so this changes day-by-day.)

My isn't as consistent about finishing books. Last night he picked up an Outer Limits book that someone gave us, and he has been reading one of the Gordon Korman Nose Pickers books (also passed along from a friend).

My daughter is currently whizzing her way through the second Warrior's series. Right this second she is sitting next to me reading Dawn, The New Prophecy Warriors, book 3, by Erin Hunter.
