I am really new to this site. To be honest, I largely joined to get some feedback on a website the we created to help people find that next book to read.
The website catalogs over 100,000 books and 125,000 reading lists and allows users to display and print out a list of 100 books related to any book. So, if you’ve just finished a good book, enter it into our search field and the site will display books connected to that book. But, I am worried that just posting a link to the site breaks the Book Lust and Wet Paint anti-spam policy... But I really would like some feedback from other avid readers on how well the site does at recommending other books to read. So, is this an OK thing to post here or is somewhere else more appropriate?

I recently joined my first book club and just started reading next month's selection. However, I'm struggling with the best approach to reading the book, taking notes, and remembering important points. Does anyone have suggestions? Are there tools available to help readers be more efficient? Currently I am highlighting important passages and jotting down notes on a pad of paper, but I'm wondering if there is a better way. I'm sure it varies by reader, but I am just curious what other people are doing.
Thanks for your help!

Following are five sentences that forced me to dog-ear book pages and pause to consider the author – not for pulling me out of the story, but for giving me writer envy. Yes, when I read the following, I couldn't help but say, "I wish I'd written that!"
"An incidental discovery was that even legendary success brought little happiness, only redoubled restlessness, gnawing ambition." Ian McEwan, On Chesil Beach ".....Claire says, turning to the counter to order what sounds like six drinks but turns out to just be a coffee." Jonathan Tropper, How To Talk To A Widower "Until now, Tom and Paula had all their wounds in common. Every hurt was diluted immediately, reduced by half for being shared, reduced again, almost redeemed by the attention that it earned." Lynn Hoffman, bang, Bang "But I was also free, invisible, as if the only evidence of my existence were in the tasks I performed, the services I rendered to others. When I stopped work, I disappeared." Rosemary Poole-Carter, The Women of Magdalene "Now, fifteen years and one mildly gifted son later, they had little to talk about. They were prone to epic silences and kept up their little hostilities like rubbed bronze." Dominic Smith, The Beautiful Miscellaneous What great sentences have you read recently?

Women everywhere will cheer for Daisy Dooley!
Daisy Dooley Does Divorce by Anna Pasternak is a humourous and heartfelt romp through 39 year old Brit, Daisy Dooley's divorce and her consequent quest to understand men, relationships, and most importantly herself and the decisions she makes. It's a Bridget Jones's Diary for divorcees and an easy, charming and highly enjoyable read. It's sometimes very silly but also often poignant and Daisy's penchant for spiritual/self-help books makes her a kindred spirit. You will love this heartwarming, easy-to-read-in-a-few-sittings book even if you’re not divorced or have never been married. Anyone who has been disappointed at some point in her life by love, particularly by a man who she was in love with, will find so much in common with delightful Daisy. She’s full of spirit, sass and sensitivity and if she were a real person I would want to be her friend. A funny inspiring tale for anyone who has braved the courageous and sometimes disastrous journey towards true love. Meet Daisy Dooley: “The only thing sadder than being thirty-nine and still single is being thirty-nine and freshly divorced. And unemployed. And living with your mother. (And her dogs.)” In the tradition of Sex and the City and Bridget Jones's Diary, Anna Pasternak's popular column in the London Daily Mail, "Daisy Dooley Does Divorce", has evolved into this witty novel full of hope, humor, wine...and dachshunds. We have created a Fan Page and a Group (Fans of Daisy Dooley Does Divorce) on Facebook, each one with slightly different content, celebrating the novel and would invite you to read about it and its lovely author there and add yourself as a fan. All you have to do is type Daisy Dooley in the Search box on the top left hand corner of your Facebook profile. Daisy also has a page on MySpace at http://www.myspace.com/daisydooley All the best, Christine |

Hi there -- I'm interested in facilitating a book club. Nancy was just here at my library staff day on Friday and talked about the care and feeding of book clubs so I feel prepared. I'm open to suggestions on the type of book but I like non-fiction, historical fiction, biographies, fantasy, sci-fi.

Cryptic Bindings, a creepy little press in the Pacific Northwest is publishing a free serial novel this summer (and possibly into the fall) that's going up in free weekly installments. The first 12 chapters are up, so readers have a good sized bit of the story to start in on and get up to speed before the excitement really starts unfolding. I'd love to see if your readers would be interested in this as yet Untitled Thriller (we're running a title contest as part of this kickoff feature). Our first novel "on/off - a jekyll and hyde story" will debut this fall.
The address for the site is www.crypticbindings.com Hope you enjoy! |

I loved the book! It kept me entertained throughout the whole thing. Hearing individual examples from nightclubs, Barneys, Airlines, etc. was an excellent way to give advice to entrepreneurs on how to stand out. I especially liked the excerpts about Barneys. Before reading Chasing Cool I never really knew the history behind Barneys being a discount store. I found the story behind bringing high-end brands such as Versace and Prada to the United States to be very motivating. This is an excellent example of how following your instincts and going where no one has gone before can prove to be very rewarding. This book will definitely be a reference point for me as I enter the workforce and attempt to stand out myself in today’s marketplace."

This novel effectively draws you in and holds your attention through all of the ups and downs of the investigation. The author's highly descriptive style, and realistically personalized characters gives the reader a true-to-life snippet of the time period surrounding this investigation. The final chapters wrap things up in a surprising yet satisfying manner. The only thing this author leaves you wanting for is the sequel. This novel really is a page turner and worth getting a copy.

There will be a reading of highlights from Ulysses at 7:00 PM on June 16, 2008, at the Irish Channel Pub, at 5th and H Streets, NW in Washington DC. This is sponsored by the Harvard Club or Washington, DC and Washington Independent Writers. It is open to the public, and it is free of charge.
We still have room for some readers (thus far 11 of the 18 episodes are spoken for). James Joyce has blessed this event.
