Are you tired of ChickLit?
Sep 29 2009, 1:28 PM EDT | Post edited: Sep 29 2009, 1:28 PM EDT
I'm looking for some HenLit; books about mature women who face real-life challenges. I'm sick of reading about women whose biggest decisions involve choosing the right wrinkle filler or buying the right designer bag. Any suggestions? Do you find this valuable?

I'd suggest a hilarious debut novel called The Bum Magnet. The main character is approaching her 40th birthday and, as many women do, has an epiphany of sorts after her most recent break up. She realizes she attracts players and decides to give up men and take a journey into the nightmares of her boyfriends past to find out why she draws these types of men into her life. She's in no way your typical chick lit "chick." BUT she still handles some very serious issues with a lot of humor. You'll love it; it's been getting fantastic reviews. And it's only ten bucks on Amazon or Barnes & Noble.com. A great holiday gift for the yourself and the girls.

Thanks, I'll check it out. Another good holiday or hostess gift is "Husbands May Come and Go but Friends are Forever." Hilarious and heartbreaking. Do you find this valuable?

This is the first time I've ever done this! I don't usually visit blogs but I was trying to find Nancy Pearl's email address so I could send her some information about my sister Mandy, aka "Black", and my recently launched, self-published book "What I Learned About Life When My Husband Got Fired! ( A Real Approach to Personal Finance and Prioritizing Your Life)". And I saw Judith Marshall's posting wanting something for women facing "real life challenges." Boy - our book is EXACTLY it! It's only been available for a few months but feedback from readers has been amazing. They tell us the book, written in dialogue format (emails, IM's and phone conversations) between my sister and myself (I'm Tina, aka "Red") is not only entertaining, but enlightening - a fast and fun read with lots of practical advice. They're even telling us they're buying multiple copies for the holidays because it's the perfect stocking stuffer. (Men and women - 20's to seniors- are all loving the book, We can't believe it. We thought we were writing it for baby boomer woman like us!) Anyway....enough blah, blah, blah, -check out our website - www.redandblackbooks.com - to find LOTS more about the book and what people (and the media!!) are saying about it. And if you're wanting to buy a copy, you'll have to do so on our website - we're not available at Amazon or any large book retailer. Why? Check out the "Our Philosophy" section on our website. (It's all us wanting to support local businesses and independent booksellers - we even printed in the USA. ) Do you find this valuable?

Interesting. One of the trigger events that sets the plot in motion in "Husbands May Come and Go..." is when the protagonist gets unexpectedly laid off. This topic is quite timely considering current unemployment rates. Best of luck with your book! Do you find this valuable?

I read "Husbands May Come and Go but Friends are Forever" and loved it! It was so well-written and realistic that my husband also enjoyed it. I related to the women because they're much closer to my age than those in most 'Chick Lit' books. Do you find this valuable?
